Health Record in Blockchain

Introduction

Electronic health record (EHR) is critical and sensitive information for diagnosing and treating patients. With the increased usage of information technology, a dramatically increasing volume of patient data are stored in different hospital institution EHR system.

However, the EHR system currently consists of different severe challenges in the health care industry: accessibility, sharing, and safety. It’s highly possible for one person to visit different hospitals in their whole life. However, because of the sharing barriers between institutions, it is possible that the doctor can’t fully understand his diagnosis and treatment without reviewing his completed historical medical treatment (Uddin, et al., 2021). As a result, the doctor cannot provide a suitable medical solution for his disease. Secondly, Many health care providers do not set up clear data privacy measures and backup protection to secure data. So once this centralized system is hacked, all the patient privacy data will be leaked on the internet, and our data may be sold and traded in the dark market. Thirdly, data ownership problem. A patient’s health record is susceptible information and is also counted as the patient’s ownership. However, in the current EHRs system, patients are not even accessible to view, modify, and control it.

The project aims to develop a blockchain solution to replace the current centralized system with a more decentralized and self-control medical health record system. The system opens to all the patients, allowing them to control their private data in a mobile and secure way. It provides decentralized file storage and a decentralized rights ledger. The file storage allows patients to upload and store their medical records. An asymmetric encryption algorithm and a permission mechanism will be applied to protect the data. Doctors and medical institutions can only access the patient’s data with their patient’s permission with the correct key.
